You know how we are … we love love, and we love everything wedding!
All year long, at Invitations by R Squared, we watch different trends come on strong, and fade almost as quickly into the sunset. Each year brings us new things, and since weddings often take a year to plan, there’s plenty of time to see super-hot trends develop.
We’re not going to look so much at dresses right now. Ok, maybe a little bit, but Barcelona Wedding Week is coming, and what we see there will show us more definitively what we can expect in wedding fashion.
We’re going to look at some other wedding trends that are looking fantastic, fresh, and fun.
These are the ones we love…
Nature. We expect that next year’s colors will continue to reflect the strong natural influence that we’re seeing with this year’s weddings. Every theme you can imagine benefits from a boost from Mother Nature herself in the forms of greenery, wood, branches, romantic lighting for evening events.
While Rustic Chic took a step back this year, expect to see a continued trend in the barn, farm, Boho, and garden themes. We absolutely love these, and are totally hooked on the big return to pure romance!
Speaking of pure romance, nothing speaks romance louder than Vintage.
The vintage wedding trend is still going strong! It’s no surprise — there’s just something that feels so romantic about adding old-world items and antiques to your big day. Expect to see couples including family heirlooms within their décor, giving a personal touch to their vintage wedding.
Paper is picking up in popularity! Easily available, affordable and potentially eco-friendly, paper can be easily customized to be incorporated in anything from your wedding bouquet and table plan to big day decor and backdrops.
More and more we are seeing pretty paper bouquets, rustic raffia ties, customized cards and chic confetti, all fashioned from paper and card. A timeless trend that is sure to continue and one that fits with just about every theme!
Ok … So, now a little bit about dresses.
We’ve seen some previews and predictions from American fashionistas as well as some across the pond, in Paris and Milan. 2018 is going to be sexy. Possibly sexier than usual. Plunging necklines, bare shoulders, ornate embellishments and bold colors will all have their time in the spotlight in 2018.
Inherently romantic, the off the shoulder dress is perfect to be complemented with 3D details by designers. Look for oversized floral ornamentation, stick-on butterflies and paper petals. These are all likely to be featured. For the bolder bride, bright colors are becoming more popular and add a memorable focal point to any theme.
For the groomed groom, leading the way in color themes are moody plum and burgundy along with the ever-faithful pastel and neutrals holding fast to ensure that touch of romance.
All in all, next season’s wedding fashion trends are perfectly romantic enough to complement any theme, at any destination wedding, no matter how far-flung.
One the most popular themes we saw pick up steam this year is the enchanted wedding. Maybe we should call it True Love, as this beautiful theme never fails to melt our hearts!
Candle lit ceremonies, petal laden paths, homemade bouquets, jam jar stars, lantern taverns, feather confetti and Macramé backdrops all make for an unforgettable heart melting movement.
Expect to be enchanted forevermore as we welcome this theme in for the long-term trend.
Customizable, affordable, adaptable to suit most venues, and totally personal too (everyone can get involved in pre-wedding creativity!), Enchantment is true love and captures the very essence of what your wedding is all about. Love.
Wedding food is always changing and evolving.
Our penchant to find every imaginative way to present and personalize the wedding feast has led to finding an upswing in ‘creation stations’ – we’re not just talking about ice cream or popcorn stands anymore… This trend has quickly evolved into Prosecco Vans, Gourmet Coffee Stands, Street Food Stations and even Oyster Bars!
Food stations aside, couples hosting their special days stateside are having a moment of seasonal and honest food recognition. Shoppers have become savvy in selecting their supplies – we’re much more aware of the sources of our foods, including the season, locality and sustainability. This has filtered down to determine our menu choices on the big day, and as such, we’ve become a real farm-to-fork nation.
Seasonal, honest, hearty food – done simply, but well, appears to be the trend that is caught in a moment and shows every sign of being content there!
Announcing your engagement via social media is one thing, but that Save the Date card and your wedding invitation need to be something special. We can help coordinate your wedding colors, some lovely fonts and even the verbiage of your choice into memorable keepsake pieces. Learn more about that here.
Wedding stationery, Save the Date cards, and wedding invitations have some hot trends of their own!
Expect to see wedding papers in ivory and black – perhaps with a bit of gold – very elegant. But if you want to go for something a little more unexpected, ultra-creative wedding invitation designers (like our Fran) definitely have color and printing options for you.
Use colors in a new and unexpected way on your invites by reversing the typical invitation color scheme. For example, rather than using pink yarrow lettering on a cream-colored invite, opt for cream print on paper the color of pink yarrow.
Or mix it up — do the cream-colored invite with fuchsia writing, and then a bright pink reply card with a cream-colored font. Consider the material of your invite as well.
Since we aren’t privy to Pantone’s next big announcement at the end of the year, we turned to some wedding style influencers and our own community of wedding planning professionals to see what they thought.
Think sophisticated brights. Sticking with just two hues (or two plus an accent color) will keep your space unified. Rather than splashing color all over your reception space, use one dynamic color for a strong statement – like bold orange table linens.
This holds especially true for your centerpieces: Instead of multicolored centerpieces, alternate single-color floral arrangements for a pulled-together look.
We found trends in music shifting as well.
Create a laid-back vibe during your cocktail hour and dinner with steel drums or a singer accompanied with a ukulele. For the reception, heat up the evening with sultry sounds — we love the idea of incorporating classic swing or big band music to add a fast, upbeat tempo to the evening.
There is a trend in décor that surfaced earlier this year that we expect to remain hot for some time. Cut citrus fruit is a favorite for summertime centerpieces, but other options out there are more unexpected and just as visually appealing.
Have your florist use hollowed-out watermelons as a centerpiece container for a casual look that’s fun and seasonal.
Another option is to go natural and green with your containers. Incorporate wooden vases or pedestals with grass or moss to give centerpieces a textured, natural feel.
We all love wedding cake.
For spring and summer wedding cakes in 2018, get inspired by the flavors you loved as a child. Think fresh strawberries and whipped cream filling for a strawberry shortcake-style wedding cake, or a citrus-infused filling like Key lime, lemon, or orange vanilla buttercream that honors a summertime fruit.
Beyond the cake, consider serving other desserts. A big-hit idea we love: Hire an ice cream truck to arrive at the end of the night offering summertime favorites — the perfect nostalgic, late-night snack for your guests.
We think favors have always been a little tricky.
Right now, eco-friendly wedding favors are bigger than ever, particularly if you’re taking advantage of natural beauty and marrying outdoors.
One idea: Give guests locally grown herbs planted in recyclable glass jars or tin cans. Dressed up with ribbon or paper in your wedding colors, they’re gorgeous and good for the earth.
Beyond plants, you might also consider donating to a local charity for a wedding favor idea that never goes out of season.
We will be forever building, updating, and curating our image collections here. As time passes and trends evolve, expect to see those collections grow as well.
As soon as you’ve settled on a date, get in touch! We’re here to help! You can chat with Fran about your colors, themes, and more, so that you can pull together the coolest wedding stationery suite ever!
