To some, the term “elope” still conjures images of hasty lovers stumbling into clandestine chapels, or frugal pairs looking to save a few pennies on the guest list. But elopements have changed. A destination elopement is a hot trend for a 2018 destination wedding.
Today, they’ve become an intimate alternative to a traditional wedding, where the details matter less than the vows being exchanged.
No longer taboo, eloping is an incredibly romantic and wild way for adventurous couples to profess their love in some of the most stunning destination wedding locations around the world.
Here are some of our favorite romantic places to sneak away to say, “I do.”
(Note: Be sure to check out the local embassy’s marriage requirements and restrictions before eloping in a foreign country.)
Tuscany is one of the most romantic places in the world to elope, full of vineyards, historic properties, and unforgettable cuisine. Just the best for a destination wedding or elopement. (And, truth be told, an elopement is just a really small wedding, right?)
The Toscana Resort Castelfalfi is a 2,700-acre labor of love built atop a former estate of the wealthy Medici family. A travel company renovated the medieval castle, villas, and apartments, and turned the tobacco factory into a boutique hotel. There is wine and olive oil made onsite, and activities include truffle foraging and tennis.
The Caribbean island is known for its beaches, rainforests, historic forts, and beautiful waterfalls. Le Grand Courlan Spa Resort is the perfect place for an intimate ceremony with its all-inclusive destination wedding packages.
The Diamond Package includes an event coordinator, a decorated wedding arch, a candlelit dinner, a cruise for two, and some local tours.
Make sure you read all the fine print before eloping in Tobago, including the residency requirement.
Nevis, West Indies
This quiet, off-the-beaten-path Caribbean island is an oasis with its sandy beaches, warm water, and chill seaside bars. Elope here? Yes, please!
The Four Seasons Nevis offers plenty of versatility when it comes to a spot for your destination wedding ceremony; you can get hitched in the sand, on a golf course, beside an old sugar mill ruin… Stay in one of the little cottages dotting the grounds.
Lijiang, in the southwestern province of Yunnan, is a charming, historic town with cobblestone streets and a dramatic Himalayan backdrop. It’s also a Unesco World Heritage site.
You don’t want to miss the Spa Sanctuary Duplex at Banyan Tree Lijiang, a private townhouse where you can also indulge in daily 90-minute spa treatments for couples. Plus, the resort has a “romance concierge” who will help you plan your ceremony.
Sure, we often think of elopements as beach affairs, but frolicking among the Alps — complete with beer and bratwurst — could be just what you need.
The Schloss Elmau is partially inside an early-20th-century castle and describes itself as “a sanctuary framed by dramatic peaks, whispering forests, and rushing streams.”
Onsite, there’s an extensive wellness program, including a hammam, a pool, yoga classes, personal training, and a Chinese-medicine center. You can also enjoy world-class performances in the concert hall.
When you think elopements, it’s this region that may be one of the first to come to mind for elopements, vow renewal ceremonies, and destination wedding events of all kinds. Provence in the South of France is known for its culture, wine, and romance.
Le Mas de la Rose is a country-chic estate that’s a dreamy spot for an elopement ceremony — or any kind of romantic retreat. Stroll through the olive groves and enjoy world-class wine as you celebrate your union in style.
Song Saa Private Island, Cambodia
Purchased for only $15,000 and built up by a passionate, entrepreneurial Australian couple, Cambodia’s first private island is a luxury resort with a commitment to conservation. Invite your nearest and dearest to a ceremony on the white, sandy beach, and then enjoy an intimate dinner under the stars.
It’s hard to beat Song Saa’s jungle villas when it comes to romantic lodging. Think private pools overlooking the jungle, your own beach with sun beds, and mojito-making stations…
Welcome to paradise.
Fiji is known as the wedding capital of the South Pacific, so you won’t lack choice when it comes to venues. Many of the resorts across its 300-plus islands offer wonderful all-inclusive elopement-package deals. Whether you’re looking for a simple, barefoot-on-the-beach ceremony or a luxe private-island escape such as Turtle Island, you’ll find something to love in Fiji.
Matangi Private Island Resort offers an all-inclusive wedding package for about $1,000. In addition to a ceremony and reception, it even includes floral leis for the couple and a Fijian choir. After your rum-punch-filled reception, you can retire to your private treehouse, complete with an outdoor Jacuzzi. And good news: A Fiji marriage license is legally accepted worldwide.
What’s more romantic than strolling the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal together?
Brush up on your French and retreat north to this charming city. Be aware that the law in Quebec requires you to announce your intent to marry 20 days ahead of time. Also, because Canada’s more progressive than us, both spouses keep their last names by law.
The sleek, half-Old World, half-modern Hotel William Gray has the perfect roof terrace for small elopement ceremonies — plus an interior garden. You can’t beat that view of Old Montreal!
We trust that we’ve brought you some new ideas if you’re thinking about the possibility of a destination elopement wedding. If you’re on the fence, that’s perfectly ok, too. You can always switch to a destination wedding, with only your nearest and dearest joining you for the adventure.
Either way, at some point, you two will probably want a celebration when you get home.
