We are noticing that more and more couples are not only choosing beach weddings away, but they’re choosing beach destination wedding events in EUROPE!!
Yep, it’s true. Europe.
Of course, there’s a lot of fairly standard stuff to planning a beach destination wedding anywhere. European destination weddings take more. Here are some tips and things to consider:
Remember that it’s going to be hot. A nice time to exchange vows is just before sunset when it’s cooling down and this also means you can have your photographs taken as the sun goes down when the light is at its most flattering.
There are no formal rules to weddings on the sand, so this is your opportunity to create your own beach wedding vibe.
On site wedding coordinators can help you along, but you might want to take a seaside theme like shells, starfish or coral and weave that into your invitations, table settings and so on.
Most resorts have wedding packages. Make sure you look carefully at what’s included, and if there’s anything extra you’d like, remember to ask for it, as most resorts will be happy to arrange tailormade extras – for a price, of course.
Beach destination wedding ceremonies are usually much briefer than a traditional church wedding for example, so make sure you are happy with the vows and the length of the service.
If it’s just the two of you, how about organizing something special after your elopement like a champagne sunset cruise before your wedding meal?
Before the wedding, make sure you don’t get sunburnt or overdo the tan. Wedding photos are for life!
Don’t go for a huge wedding dress that’ s going to be uncomfortable on a hot day or cumbersome on the beach. Natural fabrics like silk are best.
Grooms also take note. You won’t enjoy your day if you’re sweltering, so ditch the suit for a crisp white shirt and cool trousers. You’ll find some on-trend destination wedding ideas here and here.
If you are marrying on the sand, remember that high heels will sink in. If you simply must wear heels, wedges are the best option, but pretty sandals are more practical.
And now … location, location, location…
Where do you WANT to get married?
Though Greece has seen a tumultuous political landscape in recent years, it remains one of the most popular travel spots in Europe thanks to its extensive history, beautiful coastline, and enviable Mediterranean climate.
To marry in Greece, a passport or other traveling document, along with birth certificate copies, single status forms, and marriage license applications are required. A wedding notice must also be published in one local newspaper eight days prior to the wedding. Divorce and death decrees are also required if those elements apply.
What’s the best place to stay?
The Blue Palace on Crete!
Nestled on the famed coast of Elounda on the island of Crete, our luxury beachfront resort offers emblematic views to the relics of Spinalonga Island. A luxury resort in Greece with exceptional charm, architecture and style, Blue Palace Resort & Spa is the perfect hideaway to combine island luxe accommodations, authentic cuisine and a soothing retreat for the senses.
Santorini! The image of startlingly-blue dome towers capping stark-white villages high above the sea is one of Greece’s most iconic.
The Aegean Sea is visible for miles, as are the surrounding hills and mountains. A destination wedding in Santorini is filled with opportunities for exploring, whether you want to wander through ancient monasteries carved into cliffs or shop for precious gems at colorful town markets.
Reflecting traditional Aegean architecture and overlooking the island’s volcanic crater or caldera, the Andronis Luxury Suites represents the most luxurious, dreamy escape in a Mediterranean setting beyond compare.
The multi-villa property gently cascades down the side of this unparalleled Greek island, forming part of the traditional landscape yet with Zen-like sophistication and discrete luxury that make transform these 22 award-winning suites into a lifetime experience for its elite visitors.
Andronis Luxury Suites is set in the quite town of Oia – or Ia as it is pronounced in English – only a short drive from Santorini’s airport and from Thira, the island’s main town.
There is a hidden gem in Greece, and that is Navagio Beach.
What sets Navagio apart from other staggeringly beautiful, remote beaches is the presence of an old shipwreck, a freight liner called MV Panagiotis that ran aground in 1980. It adds a pirate-esque air to the site, located on the Ionian Island of Zakynthos.
What could be more romantic than marrying away in Italy?
‘Bella vita’ means ‘the beautiful life’ in Italian.
Still, there’s a sentiment in this rich phrase that is not fully captured on paper. It’s likely because the Italians don’t just say ‘Bella vita’— they actually live it.
This refreshing perspective is found in everything from the loving preparation of fresh pasta to the hand-marbled fountains that center the piazzas.
Luckily, the Italians are happy to share a slice of the good life with all who visit.
With an incredibly diverse landscape, Italy weddings offer adventurous couples Mediterranean beaches and historic cities to explore. Not to be missed, the Puglia region of Italy is far less crowded with tourists, and a whole lot cheaper than the Amalfi Coast.
What’s more, the resort town of Otranto is near the beautiful city of Lecce, one of Italy’s most underrated destinations for food and culture. While the main town of Otranto is filled with ancient stone buildings and glorious rock pools that are ready to be plunge into, it also has local beaches like the rustic Baia dei Turchi.
Here, wild vegetation from the neighboring hills meets the beach with clear water. To fix your budget in as much as possible, you could opt for one of Otranto’s all-inclusive hotel resorts like the Le Cale d’Otranto Beach Resort.
There’s some absolutely fabulous options in Spain, as well.
Mallorca, the largest of the collection of islands located off the east coast of Spain, is also the most diverse of the Balearics.
Although it’s true that the same aquamarine waters that lap Ibiza – its southwestern neighbor – also roll onto Mallorca’s pristine shores, Mallorca’s landscape holds many more treasures. For example, look no further than the island’s Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, which lines along the northern coast and drops into the rocky Cap de Formentor.
The island’s swaths of green are draped in olive, almond and carob groves. And there’s a lovely medieval town – Palma – with its soaring cathedrals and palaces and its quaint streets and squares.
Couple that with a local culture that appreciates good food, good wine and fun – summer is a nonstop party! – and you’ll start to wonder, why not Mallorca?
